Beauty closet sales within magazines have been a thing long before this iteration started, they've just been open exclusively to magazine staffers, and generally the funds raised only go to one organization. BFS started out of a conversation amongst beauty writers (Arabelle Sicardi, Cheryl Wischhover, Tiffany Yannetta, Sam Escobar) who were wondering how best to use our resources and privilege to help others in need.

We called up our friends both in the industry and out of it to help out, and a loose coalition of editors from across (competing!) publications all joined together to provide hundreds of pounds of beauty products. Volunteers across different wellness practices joined in, offering sliding scale reiki, tarot readings, tattoo services, and more.

Our first sale raised over $10,000 in less than four hours. Now we're going to do pop-ups when we can to help organizations who are in need. This isn't an official association, just a group of people who want to do good, and who happen to be doing it together. The people involved might change and the publications might switch and the services offered probably will as well.

But the conceit of each pop-up is the same: to use the privileges we have to help others who are in danger. None of us are free until all of us are. A beautiful world is a just one.
